Living in Mesilla

Mesilla is its own town, just southwest of central Las Cruces, and it feels nothing like a subdivision. The historic plaza, adobe buildings, shade trees and narrow streets make it one of the most recognizable places in southern New Mexico.

The homes

Homes range from historic adobes near the plaza to newer homes on larger lots on the outskirts, some with pecan trees or irrigation rights. No two are alike, and many have been added onto over the years.

Getting around

Central Las Cruces is a few minutes away, and Interstate 10 runs along the east side of town. The plaza, shops and restaurants are close to most homes in Mesilla.

What to check before you buy in Mesilla

  • Mesilla has its own town government and historic design rules. Check what is allowed before planning exterior changes.
  • Adobe construction and older additions, and whether additions were permitted.
  • Irrigation rights and ditch access if the property has them, and what the yearly fees are.
  • Water and sewer service, which can differ toward the edges of town.
